Hey there, friends! Or here, and I'm excited to dive into a topic that's near and dear to my heart: inclusion. In this blog post, I wanted to share why inclusion is so vital for creating a better world for all of us, in my opinion.
So, what exactly is inclusion? Here is a short video I made about what inclusion means to me.
It’s one of those words that losses its meaning if you say it too many times. But it's about creating spaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and welcomed. Inclusion is about embracing people as they are and recognizing the unique contributions that each individual brings to the table.
But why does inclusion matter? Well, for me, when everyone feels included, they're more likely to share their ideas, express themselves authentically, and contribute to whatever the situation is. Inclusive environments foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration, leading to stronger bonds and healthier relationships. When you think about it, its really simple. If someone is too busy trying to fit in, they are not able to contribute their true self to the situation.
Unfortunately, achieving true inclusion isn't that easy. There are barriers, unconscious biases, and societal norms that can prevent anyone from fully participating and feeling included. Think about a sports fan in a comics convention. They are not going to be their full authentic selves because they are too busy fitting in (unless they are also into comics, I am sure these interests overlap). It's important to recognize and address these barriers head-on to create truly inclusive spaces where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.
So, how can we promote inclusion in our communities and workplaces? Wow, if I had the magic formula I would broadcast it everywhere! But it starts with acknowledging the importance of diversity and actively working to create environments where everyone feels valued and respected. We will know we succeeded when we discover something new about someone in our lives. Because if people feel included, they are more likely to share what they have with others.
But inclusion isn't just a one-time effort—it's an ongoing journey. We must continually strive to create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. It's up to each of us to think about inclusion and work towards building a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
These are only my thoughts though. Thanks for joining me on this journey!
